The Grand-class ships carry between 2,600 to 3,100 passengers at double occupancy. If you have specific culinary preferences or dietary needs, look into the dining options each ship offers. Some might have specialty restaurants or themed nights that cater to your tastes. Last refurbished in 2019, Emerald Princess features something for families of all ages, including  reimagined Camp Discovery youth and teen centers and the serene Sanctuary, a kid-free slice of paradise in the middle of the sea.

Larger than its predecessors, it introduced innovative features like the SeaWalk, a glass-bottomed walkway that offers breathtaking views as it extends over the ship’s edge. The ship’s spacious design ensures guests have ample room to explore and enjoy their journey. While some guests have mentioned that the basic staterooms can feel a bit compact, the plethora of onboard activities more than makes up for it. The Royal Princess remains a popular choice for its blend of luxury and entertainment.

What types of restaurants and dining options are available on Princess Cruises ships?

The Pacific Princess, with a capacity of just 670 passengers, offers a distinctly intimate cruising experience. It’s the smallest in the fleet, making it perfect for those who prefer a more personal touch. The ship often sails on unique itineraries, visiting less-traveled ports.

The recently unveiled Sky Princess was home to the first jazz club on a Princess ship (called Take 5), and a similar venue has since been added to Enchanted Princess and Discovery Princess. Schwartz also provided the score for "Magic to Do," a musical revue paired with onstage illusions that features many of his best-known songs, as well as an original number he created just for Princess. Among new productions that Schwartz has worked on is "The Secret Silk," which features life-size puppetry from Jim Henson's Creature Shop, dance and special effects.

Good Spirits At Sea

If you’re not familiar with the fleet, you might want to know which is the best ship, and which is the worst. So I’ve put together this guide that ranks all of the ships in popularity order. There are just four types of ships in the Princess fleet and for the most part, they aren't wildly different from each other. Each of these two groups is made up of ships that were constructed around the same time to the same basic design. TPG recently got a sneak peek at the most notable new features under development for the new Sun Princess during a visit to the partly completed vessel at the Fincantieri shipyard. To make sure you end up on the right Princess ship for you, it pays to study which Princess ships are the biggest and which are the smallest before booking.

Review: Princess Cruises’ Sun Princess

The difference is that Diamond Princess has largely remained there – her home port is Yokohama. Discovery Princess is, for now, the newest ship in the Princess Cruises fleet, having launched in 2022. Part of the Royal Class, she’s larger than Royal Princess and Regal Princess after some design changes which began with 2019’s Sky Princess. She’s not the eldest ship in the fleet (although you don’t have to read much further for that), but she’s the second eldest and more importantly, she is the smallest ship in the fleet, tied with her sister ship Island Princess.

Activities

The biggest Princess ships have the biggest casinos and spas among ships in the Princess fleet and the most cabins and suites — and the most variation in cabin and suite types. The Crown Princess, introduced in 2006, is a favorite for many seasoned cruisers. With a capacity of 3,080 passengers, it offers a vast array of amenities without feeling overwhelming. The ship’s Piazza-style atrium, often buzzing with live music and activities, is a central hub of entertainment.

They also have big theaters that are home to production shows, comedy clubs and multiple restaurants and bars spread across their interiors. The Grand Class ships have long been at the core of the Princess fleet, and they continue to be highly popular with Princess fans. About 20% smaller, on average, than the line's Royal Class ships, the seven vessels in the series offer a more intimate feel than the Royal Class ships while still being big enough to offer a lot of features and activities. Royal Class ships also have some of Princess' most elaborate spas with large thermal suites.

A welcoming ambience and innovative offerings create the perfect way to see the world

The most frequent comments in negative reviews mention the food being a little basic, and those dated areas of the ship – especially the public bathrooms. Sapphire Princess is another older ship in the Princess Cruises fleet, having been sailing for around 20 years. And while there are elements of the ship that are showing that age, an extensive refurbishment in 2018 has helped to keep it looking fresh and removed many of the really dated features.

While Royal-class ships can hold more than 4,500 passengers with every berth full, the line's oldest vessels (particularly the relatively small Island Princess and Coral Princess) often sail with just 2,000 or so passengers on board. There are seven Grand-class vessels in the Princess fleet in all, making it the biggest grouping of ships at the line. Unveiled between 1998 and 2008, the Grand-class vessels are smaller than the Royal-class vessels at around 107,000 to 116,000 tons in size. This smaller size allows them to operate a wider range of itineraries than the Royal-class ships, as the vessels can access some smaller ports that aren't as accessible to the bigger ships. Measuring 145,000 gross tons, Discovery Princess is the biggest Princess cruise ship ever built and has more restaurants, bars, showrooms and deck-top pool space than many older Princess ships. The Royal Princess, introduced in 2013, was a significant addition to the Princess Cruises fleet.

Select suite or package choices give clients exclusive access to the bonus Cabana Deck, Signature Lounge and Signature Restaurant and/or Reserve Collection Restaurant. You'll also find some only-on-the-Royal-class-ships extras, including, on some of the ships, a glass-floored "SeaWalk" that extends over the side of the vessel. It'll be made up of at least two vessels, the first of which (Sun Princess) is due to debut in February 2024. The second ship in the Sphere-class series, to be called Star Princess, is due to begin sailing in 2025.

She remains really popular because she is spacious, and has a lot to offer for days at sea, but she never feels too busy. For the coming year, for instance, Island Princess is sailing a 116-day world cruise out of Los Angeles (starting Jan. 20, 2025) and will also offer lengthy trips to the Arctic and the Baltic. In addition, Sun Princess is home to a clubby, magic-infused nightspot called Spellbound by Magic Castle, which is a first-of-its-kind venue at sea. Open to just 90 passengers a night (who pay for the exclusive access; the cost currently is $149 per person), it's a floating version of Magic Castle, the iconic, private club for magicians and their guests in Los Angeles. The Sphere Class is just starting to debut at Princess — for now, just one of the ships is sailing. But it's already making waves as a class of Princess ships that's a significant evolution from what came before.
